New York Times on the Communist Party USA
futureofcapitalism.com

The New York Times has a news article exploring the proposition that "leftist parties" — by which it means not the Democrats, the Working Families Party, or the Green Party, but rather the Communist Party USA and two small socialist parties — have "been given a fresh, beguiling appeal by the failures of capitalist symbols like Lehman Brothers and by debacles like the billions of dollars in securities tied to subprime mortgages."

From the article: "Mr. Webb, who joined the Communists in the 1970s, likes to emphasize the party's rich history, including the fight against McCarthyism and the volunteers who helped the Spanish Republicans battle the Fascists, rather than more unpleasant episodes like the case of the American Communist Julius Rosenberg, who spied for the Soviet Union."

Bloomberg News has an article reporting, "The Chinese government, along with philanthropy and tuition, will pay for the New York University campus slated to open in Shanghai in 2013, the school's president, John Sexton, said." When the New York Times reported plans for the new campus back in March it made no mention of the Chinese government funding.

The Bloomberg article focuses on a number of American professors who have been banned from China by the government there. It doesn't say how much money the Chinese government has committed. There's also a somewhat intriguing passage in the Bloomberg article about Timothy Geithner enlisting his father, Peter Geithner, who sits on the board of the National Committee on United States-China Relations, to help press the case of one of the banned American professors with the Chinese government.

The Times Versus The Orthodox
futureofcapitalism.com

From a New York Times news article about a new demographic survey of Jews in New York:

Those findings, contained in the first authoritative study of the city's Jewish population in nearly a decade, challenges the entrenched image of Jews as liberal, affluent and well educated. Over the last decade wealthy, Ivy League graduates like those on the Upper West Side have increasingly lost population share relative to Orthodox groups, like the Hasidic population in Brooklyn, where college degrees are rare and poverty rates have reached 43 percent.

Let us count the problems with these two sentences.

1. Basic subject-verb agreement. It should be "this finding...challenges" or "those findings...challenge," not, as the Times has it "Those findings...challenges."
