Kaplan University and Veterans
futureofcapitalism.com

Bloomberg News has a long article by Daniel Golden about how the Washington Post Company's Kaplan University "ensnares" veterans in its "quest for profits at taxpayer expense." The article says Kaplan's admissions officers traded on the reputations of Washington Post Company directors Warren Buffett and Melinda Gates:

Robinson, the admissions adviser, told Melvin that Kaplan was connected through its parent company to such luminaries as Post directors Warren Buffett and Melinda Gates, Melvin said.

"I was more familiar with Jimmy Buffett than I was with Warren Buffett," he said. "I looked into it" and was impressed by Buffett's investment acumen.

Invoking Buffett, chairman of Berkshire Hathaway Inc., and Gates, co-chair of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, is a common Kaplan tactic, Huff said.

Bloomberg Profiles John Sperling
futureofcapitalism.com

Bloomberg News carries a pretty interesting profile of John Sperling, the founder of the for-profit University of Phoenix:

In one meeting with Congressional staff members, Sperling, leaning on a cane, railed against the Obama administration, saying it was manipulated by investors betting against higher- education stocks, according to an aide who attended.

Truth is, interaction between the Obama administration and those "investors betting against higher- education stocks" would be a fine subject for some congressional or press inquiry.

The article also quotes Tom Harkin, the chairman of the Senate education committee:

"I've been accused of being against private enterprise," Harkin said. "This is not private enterprise. Ninety percent of their money is coming from the taxpayer."

NYU in China
futureofcapitalism.com

Bloomberg News has an article reporting, "The Chinese government, along with philanthropy and tuition, will pay for the New York University campus slated to open in Shanghai in 2013, the school's president, John Sexton, said." When the New York Times reported plans for the new campus back in March it made no mention of the Chinese government funding.

The Bloomberg article focuses on a number of American professors who have been banned from China by the government there. It doesn't say how much money the Chinese government has committed. There's also a somewhat intriguing passage in the Bloomberg article about Timothy Geithner enlisting his father, Peter Geithner, who sits on the board of the National Committee on United States-China Relations, to help press the case of one of the banned American professors with the Chinese government.
